Three Cheers for High Ceilings
November 30, 2010
When we set the stage for events, we aim high. Sometimes 15 feet high.
Constructed in HenkinSchultz’s lower level, we custom-built these backdrops for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting two years ago.
They were designed to look like the covers of financial magazines, one of which was founded by the event’s speaker, Steve Forbes. We think the backdrops’ towering height nicely represents our city’s high potential.
We liked the backdrops so much, we had a hard time saying goodbye. We took a photo before bidding them farewell.
Decisions With Precision

Baking is a completely different art than cooking. It takes precise measurements, attention to detail and careful calculation to make a muffin, quiche or puff pastry plump up to perfection.
Perhaps that’s why Office Manager Paula VerDouw loves baking so much. Number-crunching is her thing. It’s what makes her so good at not only her favorite hobby, but also at accounting. At HenkinSchultz, Paula’s in charge of billing, payroll and other management functions – you know, all the things that make the creative types run for their sketchpads.
Paula grew up on a hog farm near Hurley, S.D., and graduated from the Freeman Academy. Class size? Fourteen. So it was quite a transition to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, where she earned degrees in business and accounting.
Now, we hope we haven’t made Paula sound like she’s all numbers and no fun. Back in the day, she used to show pigs at county and state fairs, which we think is pretty spectacular. Our only request is that she brings in baked goods to work, not hogs.
SDSU Foundation Announces Historic Campaign
November 3, 2010

We were proud to partner with the South Dakota State University Foundation recently on a historic, record-setting announcement.
The South Dakota State University Foundation recently set a campaign goal of $200 million, an unprecedented amount for a state university in South Dakota. The original goal of It Starts with STATE: A Campaign for South Dakota State University, was $175 million to $190 million, but the amount was raised due to the campaign’s overwhelming success so far.
The foundation asked HenkinSchultz to work with them on a grand announcement of the campaign’s goal. We worked closely with the foundation’s staff to coordinate the event, which included invitations, video production, staging, T-shirt and collateral design, live streaming video on the web and more.
Congratulations to the South Dakota State University Foundation on its goal and the opportunities that lie ahead!
Smooth Moves on the Dance Floor
November 2, 2010
In seventh grade, Media Buyer Fletcher Farley toured eastern South Dakota in an all-boys dance group creatively named … wait for it … Da Boyz. So did all the fancy spin moves ready him for the whirlwind that is media buying?
Eh, probably not. The good news is he doesn’t need the preparation. Besides his exceptional negotiating and organizational skills, Fletch’s boyish good looks and alley-cat charm get him pretty far. (Look, he said that, not us, alright? Don’t call the lawyers.)
Fletch earned a degree in strategic communication from the University of Kansas, where he spent a good chunk of his time cheering on the Jayhawk basketball team. A Sioux Falls native, Fletch knows a little bit about having his hands full of different tasks. He’s been a group leader at the Boys and Girls Club (which is not unlike herding cats), and he’s had wide-ranging internships at advertising agencies in Sioux Falls and Minneapolis.
Besides finding great buys for our clients, Fletch also finds the best YouTube videos. And, come on. Who doesn’t want to watch a video of a salsa-dancing labrador?
